Editorial Philosophy

SAGE acquisitions editors work closely with their authors and editors, taking a personal interest in each project. This dedication to developing the best possible material carries over to the production process, where SAGEs copy editors and proofreaders specialists within their fields assure accuracy, consistency of style, and efficiency, guided by production editors who oversee the entire process.

Within the journal publishing programme, academic journal editors, contracted by SAGE or working on behalf of sponsoring scholarly societies, manage their respective journals in such areas as editorial policy and manuscript selection.

In addition to editorial and production teams that maintain a rigorous schedule and standard of quality, the marketing department is actively involved, developing and implementing innovative sales strategies that meet the rapidly changing demands of its customers.

SAGE gives every author and editor attention of the highest calibre. The successful integration of editorial, production, and marketing efforts ensures the distinction and strength of SAGEs publishing operations.

Marketing

SAGE Publications is a master of the direct-mail marketing process. With more than seven million promotional pieces mailed globally each year, every book and journal receives extensive coverage. Long before a book or journal ever comes off press, the marketing departments develop plans and strategies to reach the widest audience possible, maximizing the exposure of each and every publication.

SAGEs aggressive direct-mail promotion for books includes twice-yearly catalogues of all new titles as well as subject and select title brochures.

SAGEs affiliate companies in California and India, in conjunction with distributors worldwide, maximize the sales of SAGE books and journals through concentrated international marketing campaigns. This enhanced worldwide visibility endures as a premium for SAGE authors and editors.

About The Founders

Sara Miller McCune, founder of SAGE Publications, Inc. and current Publisher and Chair, remains its principal shareholder. Mrs. McCune, prior to establishing SAGE, had an eventful publishing career, holding several positions at both Macmillan (New York) and Pergamon Press Ltd. (Oxford).

Mrs. McCune received the American Evaluation Association's Special Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Field of Evaluation "in recognition of the influential role SAGE Publications played in institutionalizing evaluation."

George D. McCune, together with Sara Miller McCune, built SAGE into an international professional publishing enterprise. His passing in 1990 marked the end of a publishing career spanning four decades. In his 13 years at Macmillan, Mr. McCune served as Assistant Director of the College Division, Vice President and Director of Sales, Director of The Free Press, and founding President of Macmillan's junior college division, Glencoe Press.

In addition to his involvement in SAGE, Mr. McCune was engaged in planning activities and programs for the McCune Foundation, incorporated in March 1990 to benefit higher education. His legacy of an unfailing commitment to quality in publishing endures at SAGE today.
