SAGE and Hammill Institute on Disabilities Enter Strategic Relationship to Publish 14 Journals in Special Education

SAGE is pleased to announce beginning January 1, 2008 it will act as the Hammill Institute on Disabilities’ representative regarding subscriptions, licensing, production, advertising, and online dissemination for their 14 journals in special education.

The Hammill Institute on Disabilities recently acquired the journals from previous publisher, PRO-ED, Inc. The Hammill Institute on Disabilities, a nonprofit corporation, will continue to own, publish, and manage the journals, including selection of editors and determining the overall editorial direction. This new strategic relationship between SAGE and the Hammill Institute on Disabilities significantly increases SAGE's presence in the field of special education and furthers the Hammill Institute on Disabilities’ educational and scientific charitable purposes.

Many of the 14 journals are affiliated with or sponsored by professional associations. The journals and their respective sponsoring associations are:

Subscriptions and Online Access
All of the journals have been added to SAGE’s recently released 2008 journal price list. As of today, institutions can order directly from SAGE or via a subscription agent.

Currently available electronically on Ingenta, beginning in early 2008 all of the titles will be hosted on SAGE Journals Online (SJO), SAGE’s online journal delivery platform. SAGE will also ensure backfile for each title is digitized and hosted in a timely manner. With this improved online availability, users will now be able to access the robust research published in the journals more easily using SJO’s advanced features to search, browse, alert and link scholarly articles.

“Our missions and the educational research we publish make our  strategic relationship with the Hammill Institute ideal,” commented Alison Mudditt, SAGE Executive Vice President.  “We look forward to working with the Institute to offer them superior services and support, as well as to increasing the journals’ online accessibility and usage.”

If your library subscribes to these journals and you have specific questions about the transition of these journals to SAGE, please contact your regional account representative in the SAGE Customer Service Department.

SAGE and Maney Publishing Exchange Journals

In order to complement their portfolios, SAGE and Maney Publishing have completed an exchange of three of their journals. In this unprecedented agreement, the Maney journals Chronic Illness and Journal of Endotoxin Research have been exchanged for the SAGE journal Comparative American Studies.

SAGE and Maney have reached an agreement that the SAGE journal Comparative American Studies would continue its inclusion in all consortial deals that had been signed for 2007. From the start of 2008, however, it would no longer be included. SAGE has provided Maney with a list of customers who are entitled to access Comparative American Studies.

All orders already sent have been transferred to the correct publisher to ensure that the exchange is seamless to our customers.

Online access to Comparative American Studies is now available on IngentaConnect at http://www.ingentaconnect.com/ and all subscribers have been informed of the transfer, including consortial customers entitled to access in 2007.

Online access for Journal of Endotoxin Research is now available on http://ini.sagepub.com/.

Online access for Chronic Illness is available on http://chi.sagepub.com/.

Please ensure your system is updated accordingly with this information and all orders and inquiries for these journals are sent to the appropriate office.

SAGE announces its sponsorship of two high profile awards

For the first time in 2007, we’re pleased to be sponsoring the Young Academic Author of the Year at The Times Higher Awards, and the Lecturer of the Year Award at The Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) Student of the Year Awards

Now in their third year, The Times Higher Awards aim to raise awareness and reward the contribution that British universities make to the economic and cultural health of Britain. SAGE is the first publishing company to join the Awards to celebrate the achievements of young academic authors across the United Kingdom.

The Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) Student of the Year Awards are Britain's most important awards for science and technology undergraduates.  Supported by British Industry and Britain's leading scientific and technical institutions, the SET awards are multidisciplinary to reflect the wide range of degrees UK universities have to offer.

We know these roles are critical to helping students achieve academic excellence, which is vital both to further knowledge and scholarly endeavour but also to provide the competitive edge that universities and economies alike need to succeed.

SAGE Library Advisory Board Meetings

We will be holding our Annual Library Advisory Board Meeting in London on the 10th September this year. Last year we had representatives from Sweden, France and the UK and this year we are expecting contacts from Sweden, Greece, Holland, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland and the UK, making it a truly international and collaborative meeting.

SAGE also held a Focus Group with eleven participating librarians in Philadelphia on May 18, 2007 in conjunction with the Medical Library Association Annual Meeting. The participants in this focus group represented health sciences libraries of all sizes, including university medical school libraries, teaching hospital libraries, a government funded medical centre library, pharmaceutical and biotechnology company libraries and cancer center.  The meeting was a great success.

The objectives for these advisory board meetings are as follows:

  • To hear librarians’ impressions of SAGE as a publisher
  • To learn about their procedures for selecting and purchasing new books and journals
  • To gather feedback on SAGE's products and packages
  • To gather suggestions on how SAGE should promote its publications
  • To enable SAGE to stay in tune with the needs of our customers in the constantly changing library environment.

We enjoy the discussions that develop and are grateful to those who participate for their suggestions. We are constantly reviewing the overall suggestions of the groups, to see how SAGE can incorporate these suggestions into our business practices to ensure that we are fully meeting the needs of our customers.

If you are interested in becoming a future member of a SAGE Library Advisory Board or have any points you’d like to raise at our next meeting on 10th September, please contact the following SAGE representatives in your region:

The Encyclopedia of Cancer and Society is the first multi-volume resource to define the issues that surround cancer and its effects on society. ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

Get to Know Helen Cooke, Head of Journals Sales at SAGE London

Introducing Helen Cooke, our Head of Journals Sales at SAGE London. Helen looks after the European sales team selling into the European, Middle East and Africa regions.  Her responsibilities include looking after the team of 4 sales managers and 2 sales coordinators on a daily basis, whether negotiating site licences directly with consortia administrators, visiting libraries or working on pricing policy for future e-content models.

During such an exciting time within academic publishing, work in all departments of a publisher is fast evolving – none more so than in the sales team.  Helen might be on the road one week attending a major library conference, such as UKSG or IFLA, working to feedback comments from librarians internally within SAGE which help inform and mould future pricing model decisions, or helping to speak to the sales piece of an important society tender to win rights to publish a journal.  Helen is also an active member, on behalf of SAGE, of the UKSG committee group. Life at SAGE is certainly never dull!

As journal products are ever expanding, there are always new things to discuss with the team and to promote to the library community.  At present the e-products portfolio at SAGE consists of SAGE Premier, deep Backfile, SAGE Full-Text Collections and SAGE eReference as well as other specific health and medical offerings for hospitals.  “The most important thing” says Helen “is that we are listening to our library customers - be they subject and serials librarians or consortia negotiators. That way we ensure we are developing products that the library community wants and including flexibility in our pricing models.”

Helen also works alongside the Asia-Pacific and Indian Journals sales teams based in Singapore and New Delhi, helping to train the sales teams and advise on policy decisions specific to their territories.

Helen has been working at SAGE for almost 3 years now, before that she worked at Blackwell Publishing where she managed Journals sales in Southern Europe and India as part of the Journals sales team.  It was here that Helen got to know many of the librarians across the region and developed her interest in the evolving and fascinating world of electronic journals and academic publishing.

Outside of work, Helen’s interests are diverse: she has a keen interest in music and has sung with various choirs, including the City of Oxford Choir and Blackburn Cathedral Youth Choir (where she met her now husband who was conductor there at the time!). She also enjoys aerobics, keeping up speaking French and Spanish where possible and exploring the fine country pubs of Berkshire where she lives.

Helen spoke in July at the ALPSP Publishing and the Library of the future seminar in Oxford and is going to be speaking at the UKSG Serials Practitioners seminar, Wed 3 Oct 2007 at Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, London.
