We’re very pleased to announce a new partnership with the Hindawi Publishing Corporation to launch a suite of fully open access journals. All SAGE-Hindawi journal articles will be made freely available online via www.sage-hindawi.com, funded by author charges.
The partnership will see equal ownership between SAGE and Hindawi. SAGE will have sole responsibility for the editorial development, marketing, and promotion of the new journals, while Hindawi will provide the technology and expertise needed to run the publication process from the point of submission, through the peer-review process, to the point of final publication.
We’re committed to maintaining innovative publishing models for the benefit of our customers and publishing partners, and as such Hindawi is an ideal partner for SAGE, being able to offer a highly effective publishing system that will allow us to focus on our longstanding reputation for high quality marketing and editorial expertise, while offering a viable option for disseminating open, unrestricted access to research.
More information on the initiative is available online at www.sage-hindawi.com, and we will continue to keep you up to date as we launch new titles in 2008.

We are delighted to announce that the following Web 2.0 social bookmarking features are now live on SAGE Journals Online:
In addition, the new "Email this article to a friend" feature is now active. You will find these features to the right of an article's abstract, enabling users to share articles of interest with their colleagues quickly and easily. |
Visit the SAGE Journals Online platform at http://online.sagepub.com to browse these enhanced features.
We are pleased inform you that there has been a change to the institutional usage reporting on SAGE Journals Online. The change aims to improve the usability of the reports for you and your institution by removing the duplicate lines of usage for the same journal that you may have seen in your COUNTER reports to date.
Duplicate lines of usage arose on an account when Journal A was subscribed to individually, and Journal A was also subscribed to (on the same account number) as part of the SAGE Premier package or the SAGE Full-Text Collection packages.
A new de-duping code (implemented by HighWire Press on October 15) will ensure that usage to a journal is counted and reported just once regardless of the number of SAGE packages that grant access to it on the same account number.
Please note that you may still see a journal’s usage reported on different accounts attached to your administrator email address.
We hope you find this change an improvement in the usability of SAGE usage reports.
SAGE Journals Online is hosted by HighWire Press who are rolling out this change across all publishers on their portal. Should you have any questions or concerns about this change and your reports please visit http://highwire.stanford.edu/cgi/feedback.
It is now 5 years since the formation of COUNTER and 4 years since the launch of the first COUNTER Code of Practice in 2003 enabled libraries around the world to compare and contrast the usage for different journals and databases across different subjects from different publishers. There are now over 60 vendors providing COUNTER compliant usage reports for over 10000 full-text journals, as well as for a growing number of online databases, books and reference works. A new discipline of usage bibliometrics has developed and a great deal of work is underway to try to establish ‘value metrics’ associated with usage, in which the COUNTER compliant statistics play an increasingly important role.
COUNTER does more than just set the standards for usage reports; we are cooperating with a number of organizations to develop a range of usage-related research and services. In 2006 COUNTER carried out research, sponsored by JISC (the UK Joint Information Systems Committee) on the effects of publisher platforms on usage and we are currently collaborating with the UK Serials Group on the possible development of a new Journal Usage Factor metric. COUNTER has also worked with NISO on SUSHI (Standardized Usage Harvesting Initiative) to develop a protocol to facilitate the automated harvesting and consolidation of usage statistics from different vendors. This protocol may be found on the NISO website at http://www.niso.org/schemas/sushi/index.html#COUNTER
While COUNTER has greatly improved the reliability and usability of online vendor usage statistics, there is still much for us to do, not only to help vendors further improve their usage reports and to help librarians to make sense of them, but also to keep the COUNTER codes up to date with changes in the online delivery of information. Our future objectives fall into three broad categories:
For further information and to apply to become a member of COUNTER please visit the COUNTER website: http://www.projectcounter.org/member.html.
SAGE eReference includes over 60 of SAGE's authoritative and award-winning encyclopedias available online. Key features and functionalities include the following:
Since launching SAGE e-Reference this year, we’ve received rave reviews on the usability and content. Read on for some of the highlights!
“…the Reference Staff at Sawyer Library eagerly seeks out useful online reference collections we can make available to our users. We've just purchased a very valuable one called Sage eReference…we hope you'll find this new electronic reference shelf as useful as we do!”
—Kathi Maio, Mildred F. Sawyer Library, Suffolk University
“Will librarians and users hold the electronic version in the same high regard as the print collection? Yes, most definitely, given the content’s quality and the smooth interface. This user-friendly database presented none of the glitches that can accompany the initial use of a new product…This excellent reference resource includes a brief tutorial.”
—L. Lord, University of Kansas, CHOICE
“This product is wholeheartedly recommended for public, academic, school, and special libraries supporting research in the social sciences from high school level onward.”
—Cheryl LaGuardia, Library Journal
“To meet the needs of students, who consistently say ‘Where am I?’ while searching, SAGE has designed its interface with several visual cues, including a unique top banner for each reference-book title. This banner, a montage of the book cover design, is present on every page and changes according to the title being viewed. It is visually pleasing, stylish, and useful for reminding users where they are.”
—Sue Polanka, Booklist
“Another distinctive aspect of SAGE eReference is the Reader’s Guide, a feature found in all SAGE print encyclopedias and a dynamic navigation tool online.”
—Sue Polanka, Booklist

How will hospitals use this product?

How will hospitals use this product?
This product will be a helpful and practical tool for staff psychologists, psychiatrists and psychiatric nurses, as well as residents in training at medical schools and university training hospitals. The database includes the following:

What are the benefits to hospital staff?
The unique content in the database can be used as a training tool in hospitals. The transcripts offer an opportunity to increase the accuracy and speed of psychiatric evaluations, by allowing the appropriate hospital staff to be able to research subjects they are dealing with and apply the related experiences to their case. Furthermore, by reading transcripts of actual therapy sessions, hospital staff will gain a better understanding of the conditions of the patients they are treating. It is difficult for someone in training to treat a patient who has been suffering from a condition for several years: This database offers an opportunity for insight into the suffering of patients.
In addition to the transcripts and primary accounts, the product contains 36 SAGE handbooks and encyclopedias covering topics, including addictions, child maltreatment, cognitive behavior therapy, counseling psychology, stress, and coping. These books offer encyclopedia entries, case studies, and how-to materials.
All three types of material in the database can be browsed in a variety of ways, including by author, practitioner, the symptoms discussed, diagnosis of disorders, or therapeutic approach used in the treatment.

SAGE is delighted to have sponsored for the first time this year the 2007 SAGE Lecturer of the Year at the Science Engineering and Technology Student of the Year Awards. (SET Awards) Speaking at an “Oscar-like” awards ceremony in September at London’s Alexandra Palace, Ziyad Marar, SAGE's Deputy Managing Director and Publisher congratulated lecturers as the unrecognized heroes in the science and engineering community.
“Better funding and greater support for lecturers and teaching staff are crucial in the battle to engage and attract young people into science and engineering careers,” he said. This claim is made at a time when a shortage of science graduates risks threatening the future of British industry. The SET Student of the Year Awards are designed to raise the profile of science and technology education in Britain. They are judged by professional SET bodies and sponsored by global industrial and pharmaceutical companies.
“We’re particularly pleased to be the first academic and professional publisher to sponsor the SAGELecturer of the Year Award and delighted that Dr. Andrew Owen from the Pharmacology Department at the University of Liverpool has won the Award. It recognizes his key role in personally inspiring and nurturing the talent and drive of the young students at Liverpool today.” For further information, go to www.sagepub.co.uk/awards .
